5-Day suspension for PointsBet in Canada by AGCO

AGCO Suspends PointsBet Canada in Ontario iGaming Crackdown Over Jontay Porter Betting Scandal

In a landmark move for Ontario’s regulated online gambling market, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has temporarily suspended PointsBet Canada’s iGaming registration for five days. This is the first such suspension in the province’s tightly controlled sports betting landscape.

The decision stems from a systemic failure to monitor and report suspicious betting linked to a 2024 match-fixing scheme involving former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter.

Jontay Porter NBA Ban and Match-Fixing Ties

Porter faced a lifetime NBA ban after evidence showed he manipulated his performance to benefit prop bets won by a Gambino crime family associate. The scandal now fuels a major U.S. criminal investigation by the Department of Justice.
Ontario sportsbooks, including PointsBet, came under scrutiny as regulators probed potential insider betting ripples.

Timeline of Suspicious Betting Red Flags in Ontario

AGCO first raised alarms in early 2024, directing all licensed Ontario sportsbooks to check for Porter-related bets and flag any unusual activity.

• PointsBet initially delayed its response, then claimed no bets on Porter were offered.

• A U.S. DOJ indictment revealed scheme details, prompting AGCO to re-ask.

• PointsBet then admitted to accepting Porter bets.

• Review confirmed suspicious patterns that should have triggered immediate reporting.

AGCO CEO Dr. Karin Schnarr emphasized: “Safeguarding sports integrity and Ontario’s sports betting market is our top priority. Operators must deploy robust detection systems and staff training to spot and report suspicious activity.

PointsBet Canada Responds: “Disproportionate” Penalty Amid Past Fines

PointsBet Canada called the suspension “disproportionate,” blaming a “human error” during an organizational transition for the March 2024 misreport. The operator stressed it wasn’t intentional.

“We immediately disclosed corrected data, fully cooperated, and proactively engaged with AGCO,” the statement read. PointsBet plans to review options, including a hearing at the Licence Appeal Tribunal.

This marks PointsBet’s third AGCO enforcement action: prior fines hit in 2022 for advertising violations and November 2023 for responsible gambling lapses.

Ontario’s iGaming regulators continue tightening oversight to protect bettors and maintain market trust amid rising match-fixing threats.
